These have been the words constantly swirling around in my head since losing my two days a week job. It’s not that big a financial loss, but it certainly will impact on my finances, and it’s an amount of money I can’t really do without. Of course different opportunities present themselves at times like these…just to test you. A small cafe for sale in a not so perfect location, but cheap, and someone willing to finance the puchase. Then of course, I now have the time to dedicate to the course I still haven’t finished, but that won’t pay any bills for quite a while. And then there’s the website idea.
For a while now I’ve been playing around with a concept for a particular website. It’s something that could be financially lucrative, and there certainly isn’t a web site like it available here in the Highlands. I even talked to someone about designing it for me. Time and money have been prohibitative. But now I have time, and after talking to someone about the concept recently, I’ve decided to take the bull by the horns and do it myself!
I started the ball game rolling on Friday the 13th, before my being put off from my job. Hmm, some sort of intuitive knowing maybe. Since then I my brain has been hurting! This blog was so easy to set up. Yet my new site has been quite the opposite, (see my post: http://hotmiddlescence.com/2009/02/15/hostgator/)with one stumbling block learning curve after another.
Firstly, I did something wrong when uploading wordpressto the new site, so decided to delete what I’d loaded up and accidentally deleted files for this blog. Now that was a nightmare.
Secondly, I choose a theme with revolving pictures in the banner, and spent days trying to find out how to change the pictures. Great theme with terrible support. I did find snippets of information and along with some wordpress information, finally figured it out. After searching, trying to make sense out of what I’d found, then trying to find the files I was supposed to access, then - fear - changing code! Finally success! There they were, the photos I’d put into the code, on the title banner on my site. What a buzz!
Then of course came the plugins….Hmm still having problems there. I want a list of events, but I can’t get it to show in the side bars. AHHHH!!!
So, I wrote a page, and put it where I wanted it, and another. Then I decided to put the pages list where the events list should have gone. No, that looked awful. So what could I put there? I can’t even find the code for that bit of space. AHHHH!
For some reason, that escapes me right now, I decided to access my new site, like anyone else would, via the web address. I typed the address in the search bar, pressed the button, and whamo, recieved a database error message. AHHHH!!!!
Again Hostgator, came to the rescue, within no time at all. They are seriously good, and they should pride themselves on the service they offer. This again was my error, and again they fixed it so quickly, I was amazed.
Now, I’m at the point of deciding and writing a home page. My head is full of ideas. I just have to decide on the most suitable for the site and its functionality at this point. I also need to work out pages and categories and I really need to get some content up there, so I can share it and get some feedback. AHHHH.
I hope I’ve made the right decision, in what to do. I could possibly get another couple couple of days work to make up the deficit, between my remaining job and living, or I could spend time searching and applying for a new full time job of some sort. I could take on the non thriving cafe in a not so good location, but I want to try making a go of my new site. It involves writing, it involves the arts, entertainment, food, people, the incredibly scenic Southern Highlands; all the things I love. That’s got to be the direction to go in surely.

Brigit, I hope that the new venture, the new site, is successful in not only providing you with the missing income, but with giving you the opportunity to spread your creative wings. There’s nothing more satisfying than being able to earn money doing what you love to do.

The website idea sounds exciting, stimulating, creativity enhancing — The cafe? Sounds like a LOT of hard work, potentially tedious, scrubbing and ordering and cooking over a hot griddle. In my parts, getting a cafe off the ground is risky.
So my vote would be the website. But.. what do I know? You seem to have the drive and energy to make it happen, no matter what you choose!

It seems as though your heart is so completely in the web site, and your efforts setting it up commendable. Heart and hard work together accomplish great feats, and I’m so intrigued to see your new site.

I see your heart is set on the web venture but my intuition goes for the cafe.
A web site is a tough cookie to sell and it takes a lot of time until the money start coming in.
A coffee shop it is more lucrative and if it does relatively well you can hire somebody to do the work and take your time on developing your web.
Or you can do both like a web cafe joint.

The creative part of the webiste is the best, but the techno problemos are the bane, yes? I hope the new venture brings you the income you need and the creative outlet you will enjoy.
Although one of my fantasies has always been my own diner.

I join your other comments in wishing you great success with the new site. You’re a talented writer and an out of the box thinker so I’m sure your approach will be fresh and innovative.
Maybe you can combine several income streams. That way you don’t need to rely on just one. Best of luck with whatever you choose!

Thanks for all of your thoughts. The cafe means putting myself into more debt. The web site means chugging along, being poor, but I may be able to get extra bits of work here and there while the site is incubating and in its infancy stages. The cafe means organising finance, staff, menu, marketing, and working 7 days a week, very hard for quite a while. The web site means getting more information, getting that information onto an almost complete simple site, marketing, getting lots of hits and hopefully convincing people in the area that the site is worth spending money on, or trying for a grant. At the moment The web site sits in the ‘palm of my hand,’ the cafe behind a huge tall hedge I have to find my way through. Still, I’m following up both ventures, and I’ll see what happens.
